Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare to undertake maintenance work
  2. Risk control measures are applied in accordance with workplace procedures prior to commencing work
  3. Risks/hazards are identified, assessed, reported to relevant person/s and control measures implemented
  4. Nature of maintenance work is identified from documentation or from relevant person/s to determine the scope of work
  5. Advice on coordinating work with others is obtained from relevant person/s and applied
  6. Materials required for the work are identified and accessed in accordance with workplace procedures
  7. Tools, equipment and testing devices required for work are obtained and checked for correct operation and safety
  8. Conduct maintenance work
  9. Need to test or measure live electrical work is determined in accordance with WHS/OHS requirements and conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
  10. Circuits/machines/plant are isolated in accordance with WHS/OHS requirements and workplace procedures
  11. Non-routine events are referred to relevant person/s for directions in accordance with workplace procedures
  12. Work is conducted minimising waste of materials and energy, damage to apparatus, circuits, the surrounding environment and services
  13. Quality checks are conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
  14. Complete work and report outcomes
  15. Worksite is cleaned and made safe in accordance with workplace procedures
  16. Relevant person/s is notified of the completion of maintenance in accordance with workplace procedures and documented

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

working safely

ascertaining the nature of a breakdown

ascertaining the extent of repairs required and the personnel needed to repair the breakdown

reporting so arrangements can be made for the repair work to be carried out

undertaking specified minor repairs

dealing with unplanned events

applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and workplace procedures and practices, including the use of risk control measures

attending to breakdowns in remote area power supplies (RAPS)

checking isolation of circuits/machines/systems

completing relevant reporting

conducting quality checks

coordinating work with relevant person/s

determining live electrical testing/measurement requirements

identifying and accessing materials, tools, equipment and testing devices.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

remote area essential services facilities repairs encompassing:

windows

fences

gate

locks and catches

power generation components repairs encompassing:

diesel engines

generators

batteries

photovoltaic (PV) arrays

wind generators

auxiliary equipment

electrical lighting services minor repair encompassing:

incandescent light globes

fluorescent tubes

fluorescent light starters

diffusion devices

safety awareness

essential services facilities safety and security and emergency checks encompassing:

broken windows

faulty lighting

damaged gates

logging the inspections

notification of the situation

safety awareness

telephone encompassing:

answer calls promptly and clearly

using designated business protocol procedures

making and receiving telephone calls in a workplace-related context

obtain accurate telephone numbers from an appropriate source

establish contact using designated business protocol

procedures

convey purpose of call clearly and concisely

electrical encompassing:

identification and basic function of electrical components used

for generating and distributing

electricity safety procedures when working with electricity

identification of faulty electrical components

reporting of faulty electrical components

electrical work

relevant manufacturer specifications

relevant safe work method statements (SWMS)/job safety assessments or risk mitigation processes

relevant WHS/OHS legislated requirements

relevant workplace documentation.
